Department of Chemistry, University of Connecticut, 55 North Eagleville Road, University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT 06269-3060 Our interest has recently turned to the concept of performing microwave-promoted chemistry in vessels that have been pre-pressurized with reactive gases. This would broaden the application of microwave promoted synthesis. To date there have been relatively few reports in the literature. We have pursued research in this area using two microwave units we have in our laboratory. Using one of our multimode microwave units it is possible to perform reactions at operating limits of 80 bar. Vessels can be pre-pressurized to up to 20 bar prior to placing in the microwave cavity and we have taken advantage of the gas loading capability to perform hydroxycarbonylation and alkoxycarbonylation reactions. We have gone on to use a modified monomode microwave unit to develop further the alkoxycarbonylation chemistry as well as perform Heck coup領(lǐng) reactions using ethene as a substrate.
